Mandela8 are pleased to reveal the Mandela Field of Hope in Princes Park. We are delighted to be working with Polly Moseley and Richard Scott and Friends of Princes Park to realise this wildflower dream. We walked around the park socially distanced to visualise this and agree the plans last year. Thanks to LCVS and Torus Group for your support.
A huge thank you to Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Michelle Cox for the wonderful gift of Beebombs for Princes Park to celebrate Mandela Day. We are arranging with Friends of Princes Park and Windsor Community Primary School to plant them; thank you to Michelle and the 3 volunteers and its great to see diversity in the Clatterbridge workforce.
We have flowers of South African origin that Gardener Fergus Garrett has gifted for local community. Seed is precious, so needs to be sown on weed-free compost and grown in a sunny spot, and sown quickly we can later plant these out and add to the beauty of the sown wildflower seed on Princes Park.
If you have capacity to grow some in a sunny space in pots, indoor until it warms up, and will then join a group planting out in Princes Park at the beginning of June. Please email bloom@scouseflowerhouse.com with your contact details. We will distribute the seed at the Sunburst Gates of Princes Park on 2 occasions week commencing 10th May and deliver where necessary with some growing tips.
Thank you Mandela8, Great Dixter and Friends of Princes Park.

News Story
First elected African-Caribbean female Government Minister becomes Mandela8 PatronLiverpool charity, Mandela8 have announced LFC and England international, Trent Alexander-Arnold as their newest patron.
The West Derby-born, twenty-one-year-old has played for both his boyhood club and his country at various levels, making his senior debut for LFC in 2016 and for the England first-team in 2018.
He has won both the PFA Young Player of the Year and the inaugural Premier League Young Player of the Season awards, has twice been named in the PFA Team of the Year, and most recently helped end Liverpool’s 30-year league title drought by winning the 2019–20 Premier League earlier this year.
The announcement comes as Mandela8 – the organisation behind the new Nelson Mandela memorial in Princes Park – are preparing their next ‘Roots and Wings’ community programme, designed for young people who lack positive role models and are at risk of criminal exploitation or violent crime.
Over 12 weeks, participants in the programme will be guided through possible solutions to prevent them re-engaging with crime and violence, building their resilience and strength to ‘say no’ and not get involved in situations that could put them at risk.
Alexander-Arnold was recently the subject of a documentary by local model and filmmaker Rubi Deschamps, in which the “Liverpool lad whose dream came true” spoke of his childhood, his school life, and growing up under the spotlight.
Speaking on the responsibility he feels as a role model for young people, Alexander-Arnold said:
“I’ve got a big platform; I know a lot of kids look up to me. It’s not just about being a role model on the pitch. I want to be someone who feels as though I’ve made a change in the way that people think. If I get through my career and I haven’t done that, then I’d see that as a failure on my part.”
“The Roots and Wings programme and the work that Mandela8 does for young people in Liverpool will give kids a chance at avoiding the kind of pitfalls that are so easy to fall into if you don’t have the right guidance at that age. It’s why I’m delighted to become not only a supporter of the programme, but also patron for Mandela8”.
The young people taking part in the Roots and Wings programme live in areas of high deprivation, where fear of crime is not unusual, and are frequently disengaged from school and at risk of permanent exclusion. This can lead to them becoming socially and economically excluded in their communities.
The programme includes restorative justice practices and aims to find enduring solutions to prevent the young people from becoming involved in crime and violence and will support them to recognise consequences, understand cause and effect, reduce naivety and increase their resilience and strength.
It will also support cultural change around the acceptability of carrying weapons and help them not succumb to peer pressure in order to develop into young leaders of the future.
Chair of Mandela8, Sonia Bassey said: “We feel blessed that Trent wants to join Mandela8 as a patron; so many young people need role models like Trent to give them hope and aspiration. Life is really tough for young people currently, and has been for some time, so to have a positive, successful young role model to work with us is truly significant for our young people.”

First elected African-Caribbean female Government Minister becomes Mandela8 PatronSponsored by Torus Foundation
Liverpool charitable organisation Mandela8 marked Mandela Day this year by encouraging the public to take part in a whole week of activities aimed at promoting community cohesion and highlighting those who have been affected by the ongoing pandemic.
The group behind the new Nelson Mandela memorial in Princes Park had originally planned for a visit from Mandela’s family to mark its opening this July, but sadly plans had to be put on hold due to both construction work and travel being so adversely affected by the lockdown.
Adapting to the country’s current situation, the charity decided they would instead use the week – commencing 13th July – to recognise the not only the pain and suffering that local communities are going through but also provide a space for organisations to recognise the work their staff and volunteers have done to help people during Covid-19.
As part of their #My67Minutes campaign – sponsored by Torus Foundation – participants were encouraged to spend 67 minutes of their day taking part in their chosen act of kindness; one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service.
Highlights of the week included:
Be sure to keep up with all our activity throughout the year and our plans for what’s set to be a huge Mandela Week for 2021 by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

First elected African-Caribbean female Government Minister becomes Mandela8 PatronMandela8 is delighted to announce that our crowdfunder with Spacehive to provide emergency food and hygiene parcels to the most vulnerable and elderly in our local communities has been successful.
We began co-ordination of the project with Granby Toxteth Development Trust to ensure volunteers can deliver parcels to those in desperate need for support during the ongoing pandemic, particularly families and individuals from refugee and migrant communities.
Our partners at Torus Foundation helped get the crowdfunder over the line with a fantastically generous donation in the final week of fundraising.
Chair of Mandela8, Sonia Bassey said “The deliveries themselves will be at no cost to the project as it is a time of need and we want all resources to go into the food and hygiene parcels”
As well as the food and hygiene packs, creative art packs will also be provided to young people in families that are supported.
Mandela8 is also in preliminary discussions about the set up of a ‘Food Pantry’, offering a long-term solution to the most vulnerable in our communities. Watch this space for more information.

First elected African-Caribbean female Government Minister becomes Mandela8 PatronSonia Bassey MBE has been nominated for a Lifetime Achievers prize at this year’s National Diversity Awards.
The Chair of both Mandela8 and Africa Oyé will be recognised at a black-tie ceremony in Liverpool next year, showcasing organisations’ and individuals’ outstanding devotion to enhancing equality, diversity and inclusion in their field.
The National Diversity Awards – in association with ITV News – celebrates the achievements of grass-root communities that tackle the issues in today’s society, giving charities, role models and community heroes recognition for their dedication and hard work.
Growing up in the vibrant and active L8 area of Liverpool, Sonia became an entrepreneur at just 19 when she established herself as a community artist and director of her own business, which she still runs today. She now works as Director of Public Sector Transformation for Cheshire and Warrington, leading transformation of services across the sub region.
As well as chairing the Board of Trustees at Mandela8, Sonia is also Chair of Africa Oyé – the UK’s largest celebration of African music and culture, which takes place annually in Liverpool.
Sonia has also previously served as Chair for the Merseyside Black History Month Group and in 2017 was awarded an MBE for services to the community in Liverpool.
Sonia Bassey MBE, said:
“I come from a community that was written off by many institutions locally and its image destroyed by media perception nationally and around the world. A place where I and many of my peers were also written off. Yet I am here today celebrating having come this far in the National Diversity Awards. This is important, not only to me, but to young people who believe there is no hope for them. There is; you can aspire, you can achieve and you can be whoever you want to be. Dream big and there are people like me who have lived in your shoes here to support you.”
Dawn Morris of Mandela8, said:
“Sonia has such a heart for people and diversity and the values we have at Mandela8 are at the core of her spirit. Sonia is passionate about helping to bring an end to racial injustice and building a future filled with hope, especially for young people. Sonia’s nomination for this award is extremely well deserved and we at Mandela8 wish her all the very best on the awards night.”
The National Diversity Awards ceremony will take place on 26th February 2021 at the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool. More information and tickets to the awards can be found at https://nationaldiversityawards.co.uk

First elected African-Caribbean female Government Minister becomes Mandela8 Patron Ahead of Mandela Day this coming Saturday, Liverpool charity, Mandela8 have announced Dawn Butler, MP for Brent Central, as their newest patron.
The first ever elected African-Caribbean woman to become a Government Minister in the UK, Dawn ran a hugely successful campaign in 2015, winning her vote with a majority of nearly 20,000; giving the largest vote swing in England at the time.
The former Shadow Minister for Women & Equalities has twice been awarded by the Patchwork Foundation as the People’s Choice Labour Party MP of the Year and again as Overall MP of the Year. Dawn is a member of the House of Commons Science & Technology Select Committee, Chair of the APPG for Jamaica and APPG for Governance & Inclusive Leadership. Dawn was previously appointed as the Minister for Young Citizens & Youth Engagement at the Cabinet Office by Prime Minister Gordon Brown becoming the first ever African-Caribbean woman to serve as a Government Minister.
The announcement comes as Mandela8 – the organisation behind the new Nelson Mandela memorial in Princes Park, which will also feature an outdoor classroom – are marking ‘Mandela Week’ this year with their annual ‘My 67 Minutes’ campaign (sponsored by Torus Foundation, Platinum Sponsors for the previously scheduled visit from the Mandela Family), which aims to bring people together through acts of kindness and community cohesion.
Last year’s programme reached over 230,000 young people across the Liverpool City Region, Chester and Warrington with hundreds of volunteer hours being recorded across communities in the North West.
The charity is also in its final week of crowdfunding to support the city’s most vulnerable during lockdown with food parcels, hygiene packs and art activities for young children.
Dawn said:
“It is an honour to become a Patron of Mandela8 and to work with them to create a lasting memorial to the legendary Nelson Mandela in Liverpool. Mandela inspired me, just as he inspired so many around the world after spending 27 years in prison so that black people can have equal rights and votes and to end the brutal apartheid regime. It is upon his shoulders on which I stand. I hope that this memorial and Mandela’s story serves to inspire a new generation to campaign against racial injustice in the UK and beyond in the fight for equality and equity.”
Chair of Mandela8, Sonia Bassey said:
“Dawn is a Windrush child, as many in our communities are, and she has worked hard from a young age to achieve what she has in Parliament and she has a deep rooted commitment to challenging inequality. I’m delighted that the first Black woman to speak from the dispatch box and the first ever elected African Caribbean women to serve in Cabinet has agreed to become a patron for Mandela8. We cant wait to welcome her back to Liverpool”.
