This page supplies a guide to a journey along Princes Avenue, from the Rialto at the gateway to L8 to the Mandela Memorial on the island in Princes Park’s lake. As you scroll down the page, you’ll see the walk route and links to various pieces of video, audio and texts that highlight the history, heritage and culture of the area, with special emphasis on the experience of its Black community.
It works in tandem with Mandela8’s A Walk Along The Avenue booklet. On our guided walks, participants receive an illustrated map with QR codes at landmark moments along the route, that bring them to this site and the mountains of additional information and resources available through the links here.
Mandela8 is grateful for the support given to this initiative by Culture Liverpool, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, The Shared Prosperity Fund UK, and to the many contributing individuals and organisations. These include Laurence Westgaph, Bea Freeman, Dave McTague, Rich Pontefract, Yaw Owusu, Elliss Eyo-Thompson, National Museums Liverpool, Writing on the Wall, Granby 4 Streets CLC, Friends of Princes Park, Africa Oye, Mellowtone, On Record and Culture Liverpool.
